Wiz Lose; Arenas Plays Despite Gun Controversy

Roger Mason Jr. put up a season-high 20 points off the San Antonio Spurs bench as the Washington Wizards fell at home to the 20-11 Spurs, 97-86. Coach Flip Saunders and the Wizards front office have bigger problems than a 10-21 record. Gilbert Arenas shot 10 of 25 and played exactly 35 minutes to post 23 points amidst a huge gun and gambling controversy surrounding 'Agent Zero' and teammate Javaris Crittenton. Crittenton has been unavailable to play since right foot surgery on November 1st.

It has been confirmed that on December 21st, Arenas was found to have brought in guns into the Verizon Center locker room. There are other rumors swirling about Arenas pulling out a gun and pointing it right at teammate Javaris Crittenton who may or may not have had a weapon in his possession. Washington D.C. has some the most strict gun policies in the country that could have the Wizards and even the league itself facing federal punishment. "The situation involving an incident in the locker room is troubling to our family, our organization and our fans," claimed in a Saturday statement from the family of deceased owner Abe Pollin. "We know our fans are frustrated and angry. The fact that guns were brought into the Verizon Center is dangerous and disappointing and showed extremely poor judgement." Pollin died on November 24th last calendar year and is the sole reason why Washington is now known as the Wizards instead of the Bullets.

The Wizards came out with a statement on Christmas claiming Arenas brought unloaded firearms into a locked container in his locker to get them away from his home after his newest child was recently born. Two league officials have been briefed on the situation in which the Arenas-Crittenton squabble does involve card-playing gambling debts. The league officials are staying anonymous due to the fact they can't come out publicly during these matters. The NBA's collective bargaining agreements states that players are forbidden from having firearms at league facilities and events. This leads to the possibility of Arenas and Crittenton seeing their contracts voided. Washington can't trade Arenas or Crittenton even if they wanted to until the federal matter is resolved. It's being leaked amongst NBA experts and officials that Washington may be looking to unload everyone including Jamison and Butler as a new group will take over the franchise from the Pollin family.

Arenas signed a 6-year $111 million contract in the summer of 2008. Back when he was with the Golden State Warriors in 2003, he was suspended one-game (that he served with the Wizards in their '04 season opener) not maintaining a proper registration on a handgun. Saunders made Arenas a captain this season, though that sees to be severely failing at this point. Slowly but surely, more news and details will emerge from this situation.
